Chris Harding is making a new short, and documenting its hideous gestation on the internet! On this page, we will post occasional production art, with the oldest material sinking to the bottom, and newer stuff piling on top of it. As we progress, scrolling down the page will be like going on an archeological excavation through sedimentary layers of creative detritus. (fitting, as this project is unfolding on a geological time scale) ALSO! More frequent updates and musings will be posted in the production log. PLUS! ENTRY 7:
THE GREAT SIMPLIFICATION
The Work In Progress has now split into two projects-- an animated short, and a comic strip. Designing the comic strip has forced some major changes and simplifications in the design of the characters in the short. This is good. This is an improvement.
I've never redesigned anything so many times. It's been a frustrating process getting this thing to look right.
Below is a frame from the comic strip. The short looks different, but more graphic than it did before.
ENTRY 6:
MOTION CAPTURE MY HAND!
Here we see a hand being video taped with dots stuck to each finger. What's this about? I don't know. It's an experiment, designed to make this short take waaaay too long to produce.

Here are some snippets from the progress of Scene 1, in which some hungry robots come across a berry bush.

TOY CAMERA PHOTOS
These are pictures I took with a $10 toy camera. They are not exactly what I'm looking for, but there's a quality about them I'd like to have in the backgrounds. There should be a dream-like feeling to this short, and I like the light, color, and grain of these little snapshots.
ENTRY 2:
EARLY BACKGROUND EXPERIMENTS
Trying to make parts of the environment look like they just exist, rather than having been drawn by anyone… The pictures you get at the end of a roll of film have that weird film-end thing. I don’t know what causes it, but if you zoom in really close, it can look like a horizon, or a sky.
Then you mess with the color and combine them with other things, like torn paper, concrete, and ink-soaked blotter paper…
…And you start to get things that look like weird, distant landscapes. I’ve got a long way to go to figure out how this all fits together, but these have potential I think:
